PESSTO tager et billede af en supernova i Messier 74
ESOs PESSTO oversigt har taget dette billede af Messier 74, der er en betagende spiralgalakse med veldefinerede og hvirvlende arme. Dog er det virkelige interessante på dette billede galaksens nye klare tilføjelse fra sidst i juli 2013 - en Type II supernova med navnet SN2013ej, der er synlig som den klareste stjerne nederst til venstre i billedet.
Sådanne supernovaer finder sted når kernen i en tung stjerne kollapser grundet dens egen tyngdekraft i slutningen af dens liv. Kollapset resulterer i en kæmpe eksplosion, der udsender materiale langt ud i rummet. Resultatet kan være mere lysende end hele den galakse, den ligger i, og kan observeres i uger, og nogle gange endda måneder.
PESSTO (Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient Objects) er designet til at studere objekter, der kun fremkommer på nattehimlen i kort tid, som f.eks. supernovaer. Dette gør det ved at udnytte af en række instrumenter på NTT (New Technology Telescope), der ligger på ESOs La Silla-observatorium i Chile. Dette nye billede af SN2013ej er taget ved at bruge NTT som en del af PESSTO.
SN2013ej er den tredje supernova, der er blevet observeret i Messier 74 siden årtusindeskiftet, de andre to er SN 2002ap og SN 2003gd. De blev først opdaget d. 25. juli 2013 af holdet bag KAIT teleskopet i Californien, og det første billede blev taget af amatørastronom Christina Feliciano, der brugte det offentlig tilgængelige SLOOH Space Camera til at kigge på området i dagene og timerne lige før eksplosionen.
Messier 74 ligger i stjernebilledet Pisces (Fisken), og er et af de sværeste Messier objekter at spotte for amatørastronomer på grund af dens overflades lave klarhed, men SN2013ej burde stadigvæk være synlig for omhyggelige amatørastronomer over de næste uger, som en klar stjerne der falmer.
