En supernovas kommen og gåen

En usædvanlig ny video viser hvordan en supernovaeksplosion i galaksen NGC 1365 hurtigt blusser op og derefter langsommere blegner igen. Supernovaen, der er navngivet SN 2012fr, blev opdaget af den franske astronom Alain Klotz d.27. oktober 2012. Billederne indfanget af det lille robotteleskop TAROT, placeret ved ESOs La Silla Observatorium i Chile, er blevet samlet til denne unikke film.

Supernovaer er resultatet af visse typer stjerners eksplosive og kataklysmiske dødskramper. De er så lysstærke, at de i mange uger kan overstråle hele den galakse, de ligger i, før de langsomt svinder ud af syne.

Supernovaen 2012fr [1] blev opdaget af Alain Klotz om eftermiddagen d.27. oktober 2012. Han havde travlt med at måle lysstyrken af en svag, variabel stjerne i et billede fra robotteleskopet TAROT (Télescope à Action Rapide pour les Objets Transitoires) ved ESOs La Silla Observatorium, da han bemærkede et nyt objekt, som ikke var der i et billede taget tre dage tidligere. Efter at have kontrolleret med teleskoper og astronomer over hele verden blev det klare objekt bekræftet i at være en type Ia supernova.

Nogle stjerner lever sammen med en anden stjerne, hvor de begge kredser om deres fælles massemidtpunkt. I nogle tilfælde kan den ene af dem være en meget gammel hvid dværg, der stjæler materiale fra sin makker. På et tidspunkt har den hvide dværg tappet så meget materiale fra sin makker, at den bliver ustabil og eksploderer. Dette er kendt som en type Ia supernova.

Denne slags supernovaer er blevet meget vigtige, fordi de er den mest pålidelige måde, hvorpå man kan måle afstande til meget fjerne galakser i det tidlige univers. Uden for den lokale gruppe af galakser var astronomerne nødt til at finde meget lysstærke objekter med forudsigelige egenskaber, som kunne fungere som standardlys i arbejdet med at kortlægge hvordan universet har udvidet sig gennem tiden. Type Ia supernovaer er ideelle til dette, fordi deres lysstyrke topper og blegner på næsten samme måde i hver eneste eksplosion. Målinger af afstande til type Ia supernovaer førte til opdagelsen af universets udvidelses acceleration, et arbejde der blev belønnet med Nobelprisen i fysik i 2011.

Værtsgalaksen for denne supernova er NGC 1365 (se også potw1037a), en elegant bjælkespiralgalakse beliggende 60 millioner lysår borte i stjernebilledet Fornax (Ovnen). Med sin diameter på omkring 200.000 lysår skiller den sig ud blandt de andre galakser i fornaxhoben. En kolossal, lige bjælke løber gennem galaksen indeholdende kernen i midten. Den nye supernova kan nemt ses lige over kernen i midten af billedet.

Astronomerne opdagede mere end 200 nye supernovaer i 2012, hvor SN 2012fr er blandt de klareste. Supernovaen blev først set d. 27.oktober 2012, da den endnu var meget lyssvag, og den nåede sit lysmaksimum d. 11.november 2012 [2]. På det tidspunkt kunne den nemt ses som en svag stjerne gennem et mellemstort amatørteleskop. Videoen er sat sammen af en række billeder af galaksen optaget over en periode på tre måneder fra opdagelsen i oktober frem til midten af januar.

TAROT er et 25-centimeters robotteleskop, der er i stand til at bevæge sig meget hurtigt og starte observationer inden for et sekund. Det blev installeret på La Silla Observatoriet i 2006 med det formål at opfange kosmiske gammaglimt. Billederne, der afslørede SN 2012fr, blev optaget med blå, grønne og røde filtre.

[1] Supernovaer opkaldes efter hvilket år de bliver opdaget og rækkefølgen de opdages i i løbet af dét år angives ved brug af bogstaver fra alfabetet. Det faktum, at supernovaen blev opdaget af en fransk astronom og har fået bogstaverne "fr" er ren tilfældighed.

[2] På dette tidspunkt var dens tilsyneladende lysstyrke 11.9 størrelsesklasser. Det er omtrent 200 gange for svagt til at det blotte øje kan se det selv på en klar og mørk nat. Men hvis supernovaen på sit lysmaksimum og vores stjerne Solen blev set på samme afstand, så ville supernovaen fremstå omkring 3000 millioner gange kraftigere end Solen.
