En intergalaktisk sværvægter
Dette dybe billede viser det, der kaldes en superhob af galakser – en kæmpe gruppe af galaksehobe, der er klumpet sammen. Denne hob, der er kendt som Abell 901/902, indeholder tre separate primære hobe og et antal filamenter af galakser, der er typiske for denne type superstrukturer. En galaksehob, Abell 901a, kan ses over og lige til højre for den fremtrædende røde stjerne i forgrunden nær midten af billedet. En anden hob, Abell 901b, ligger til højre for Abell 901a og en smule længere nede. Endelig ligger hoben Abell 902 direkte under den røde stjerne mod bunden af billedet.
Superhoben Abell 901/902 ligger lidt over to milliarder lysår fra Jorden og består af hundredevis af galakser i et område der er omkring 16 millioner lysår på tværs. Til sammenligning er den Lokale Gruppe – der indeholder vores egen galakse, Mælkevejen blandt flere end 50 andre galakser – kun rundt regnet 10 millioner lysår på tværs.
Dette billede er taget med kameraret Wide Field Imager (WFI) på MPG/ESO 2,2 meter-teleskopet, der står på La Silla-observatoriet i Chile. Ved at bruge data fra WFI og fra NASA/ESAs Rumteleskopet Hubble, var astronomer i 2008 i stand til præcist at kortlægge fordelingen af mørkt stof i superhoben og viste, at hobene og de individuelle galakser, der udgør superstrukturen, ligger i store klumper af mørkt stof. For at gøre dette kiggede astronomerne på, hvordan lyset fra 60.000 fjerne galakser, der ligger bag superhoben, bliver forvrænget af tyngdekraften fra det mørke stof, og afslørede derved dets fordeling. De fire primære klumper af mørkt stof i Abell 901/902 menes at være omkring 10 billioner gange tungere end Solen.
Observationerne, som er vist her, er en del af COMBO-17-undersøgelsen, der er en kortlægning af himlen, foretaget med WFI-kameraret gennem 17 forskellige optiske filtre. COMBO-17-projektet har indtil nu fundet over 25.000 galakser.
