Månen og Mælkevejens bue
ESO’s fotoambassadør Stéphane Guisard har optaget dette forbløffende panoramabillede af ALMA, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array i de chilenske Andesbjerge. Den 5000 meter høje og ekstremt tørre Chajnantor-højslette skaber de perfekte forhold for dette banebrydende teleskop, der studerer universet i lys med millimeter- og submillimeter-bølgelængde.
Flere store antenner dominerer midten af billedet. Når ALMA står færdigt, vil det have i alt 54 af disse paraboler, der er 12 meter i diameter. Over anlægget ses Mælkevejens bue som en strålende baggrund. Da panoramaet blev taget, stod Månen tæt på Mælkevejens centrum på himlen, og dens lys badede antennerne i en spøgelsesagtig glød. Den Store og Lille Magellanske Sky, der er Mælkevejens største satellitgalakser, ses som to lysende pletter på himlen til venstre. Et særligt klart stjerneskud ses nær den Lille Magellanske Sky.
Til højre ses nogle af ALMAs mindre 7 meter antenner. Tolv af disse antenner vil blive anvendt til at danne Atacama Compact Array. Længere til højre skinner lysene fra anlæggets teknikbygning. Og bag denne bygning lurer Cerro Chajnantors mørke bjergtop.
ALMA, en international astronomifacilitet, er et partnerskab mellem Europa, Nordamerika og Østasien i samarbejde med Chile. Konstruktionen og driften af ALMA ledes i Europa af ESO, i Nordamerika af National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) og i Østasien af National Astronomical Oberservatory of Japan (NAOJ). Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) står for den samlede ledelse og overordnede styring af konstruktionen, ibrugtagningen og driften af ALMA.
