Rundt om Chajnantor – et 360 graders panorama
Selvom Cerro Chico når en højde på hele 5300 meter over havet, er det kun et lille bjerg i landskabet på den majestætiske højslette i Andesbjergene. Faktisk betyder navnet på spansk ganske enkelt ”lille bjerg”. Fordi det ligger på Chajnantor-højsletten, udgør toppen af Cerro Chico imidlertid et fremragende og forholdsvis lettilgængeligt udsigtspunkt, hvor dette storslåede syn kan nydes.
Midten af dette 360 graders panoramabillede ser mod nordøst, hvor de største vulkaner – de fleste af dem over 5500 meter – kan ses. I midten er selve Cerro Chajnantor. Til højre på højsletten ses Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) teleskopet med Cerro Chascon bagved. Længere til højre, mod sydøst, ses næsten hele Chajnantor-højsletten. Ud over APEX-teleskopet ses tre Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter (ALMA) antenner. Mange flere er blevet tilføjet siden dette panorama blev optaget.
Til venstre for Cerro Chajnantor ses Cerro Toco. Længere til venstre, mod nordvest, ses Licancabur-vulkanens markante kegleform.
På Chajnantor-højsletten i 5000 meters højde er luften så tynd og tør, at det virker som om dine lunger aldrig bliver fyldt. Takket være disse ekstreme forhold kan millimeter- og submillimeter-strålingen, der kommer fra universet, passere gennem den rest af Jordens atmosfære, som er over stedet, og kan blive opfanget fra overfladen med tilstrækkeligt følsomme teleskoper som ALMA og APEX.
APEX er et samarbejde mellem Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR), Onsala Space Observatory og ESO. ESO står for driften af teleskopet.
ALMA, en international astronomifacilitet, er et partnerskab mellem Europa, Nordamerika og Østasien i samarbejde med Chile. Konstruktion og drift af ALMA ledes for Europa af ESO, for Nordamerika af National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) og for Østasien af National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) står for den samlede ledelse samt styring af opførelsen, ibrugtagningen og driften af ALMA.
