ALMA ser på galaksen 9io9
Billedet viser, hvordan magnetfeltet i den fjerne galakse 9io9 er orienteret. Vi ser galaksen som den så ud, da Universet kun var 20% af den nuværende alder - og det er den fjerneste registrering af en galakses magnetfelt indtil nu. Observationerne er gjort med Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), som ESO er partner i. Støvkorn i 9io9 rettes delvist ind efter galaksens magnetfelt, og derfor udsender de polariseret lys - hvilket vil sige, at lysbølgerne svinger langs en foretrukket retning istedet for tilfældigt. ALMA har registreret dette polariserede signal, og ud fra det har astronomerne kunnet udlede retningen for magnetfeltet, som vises her som buede liniern lagt ind over billedet fra ALMA.
Det polariserede signal fra det magnetisk oplinierede støv i 9io9 var meget svagt, og det udgør kun en procent af det samlede lys fra galaksen. Astronomerne har derfor brugt et af naturens smarte tricks for at lokke et resultat frem: Det har været en hjælp at 9io9, selvom den er meget fjern, er blevet forstørret via en proces, som kaldes en gravitationslinse. Det forekommer når lyset fra en fjern galakse passerer tæt forbi en meget stor galakse i forgrunden. Så vil tyngdekraften fra den nære galakse forstærke og forvride lyset fra for eksempel 9io9.
