Vzrušující malý časosběr - rok ze života ELT
Minulý rok jsme viděli neskutečný pokrok na ESO Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Na tomto Obrázku týdne se koukáme do minulosti na to, jak daleko už ELT došel.
Zpočátku vidíme pouze kostru ocelové kupole, kterou během roku postupně pokryla nová, lesklá a tepelně izolující obložení. Panel po panelu je enormní konstrukce - 80 m vysoká a 93 m široká - zabalována do teplé peřiny z hliníku a jiných tepelných regulátorů. To pomůže udržet vzduch uvnitř teleskopu očekávané noční teploty a zároveň jej chránit před pískem a prachem z drsného pouštního prostředí, ve kterém je ELT umístěn.
To ale není vše, tento časosběr také ukazuje, jak pokročila stavba hlavní části ELT. Uprostřed kupole se tyčí lehký a odolný kolos, který svým vzhledem připomíná velký křišťál a jednou se stane domovem zrcadel ELT. Jeho základy tvoří enormní konstrukce o šířce 39 m, postavená za účelem uchycení všech 798 segmentů hlavního zrcadla M1. M1 je počinem astronomického inženýrství, navržený tak, aby sbíral deset milionkrát více světla než lidské oko a soustředil jej přes všechna čtyři další zrcadla ELT. Tři z nich budou umístěna v robustní centrální věži, která byla nedávno nainstalována.
Kromě toho se v roce 2024 událo mnoho jiných věcí, které by stály za oslavu, byť se nevešly videa. Například v lednu do Chile dorazily první segmenty zrcadla M1, které byly později v březnu potaženy odrazivou stříbrnou vrstvou. Za pár dalších měsíců v září byly dokončeny (nevyleštěný) předkovek pátého zrcadla M5 a podstava, jež jej bude držet (zatímco bude přizpůsobovat pozici zrcadla až 10krát za sekundu). Ve stejném měsíci bylo postaveno posledních 6 laserových zdrojů - části adaptivní optiky teleskopu, které budou opravovat poruchy v atmosféře. Mezitím se vývoj vědeckých přístrojů ELT postupně posouval kupředu - METIS a MICADO absolvovali jejich závěrečné návrhové recenze a dále byla podepsána dohoda o výstavbě ANDES. S těmito všemi úžasnými výsledky za pouhých 12 měsíců nám zbývá jen s nadšením očekávat, kolik skvělých věcí nás může čekat v roce 2025.
