Laserová palba do Galaktického středu
V polovině srpna 2010 ESO fotovyslanec Jurij Beletsky vyfotil na ESO Paranal Observatoři tuto úžasnou fotografii. Skupina astronomů, když pozorovala střed Mléčné dráhy, používala systém adaptivní optiky LGS(Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system) instalovaný na Yepunu, na jednom ze čtyř teleskopů VLT (Very Large Telescope).
Yepunův laserový paprsek prochází skrze majestátní jižní oblohu a vytváří umělou hvězdu 90km vysoko v zemské mezosféře. LGS je součástí systému adaptivní optiky dalekohledu VLT a je používán jako reference pro korekci vlivu atmosféry na snímky. Barva laseru je přesně naladěna na energii vrstvy atomů sodíku nacházejících se v jedné z horních vrstev atmosféry - stejnou barvu známé z barvy pouličních sodíkových lamp. Tato vrstva atomů sodíku, jak se domníváme, je pozůstatek meteoritů, které vstupují do zemské atmosféry. Při excitaci světlem z laseru, atomy začnou zářit a vytvoří malý světlý bod, který může být použit jako umělá referenční hvězda pro adaptivní optiku. Použitím této techniky mohou je astronomické pozorování přesnější. Například při pohledu směrem ke středu naší Mléčné dráhy, vědci mohou lépe sledovat galaktické jádro, kde se nachází centrální supermasivní černá díra.
Fotografie která byla vybrána jako Astronomický snímek dne pro 6.9.2010 a Wikimedia Obrázek roku 2010, byla pořízena širokoúhlým objektivem a má rozsah asi 180 stupňů na obloze.
