Reverse rainbow — but not quite

Sky phenomena are not reserved for the night alone. Despite its deceptive appearance, this light show is not a rainbow, but something more unusual. Here a relatively rare instance of a circumhorizontal arc, caused by particular refraction and reflection of light, casts vivid colours in the clouds over the site of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory.
