Bases extremadamente sólidas
¡Las obras de construcción del ojo más grande del mundo para mirar el cielo, el Telescopio Extremadamente Grande (ELT) de ESO, están progresando! Tras una importante desaceleración de las obras debido a la pandemia de COVID-19, incluido casi un año de cierre completo del sitio, las obras se reanudaron a mediados de 2021. Como muestra esta imagen de enero de 2022, se han sentado las bases del gigantesco telescopio de 39 m, lo que nos lleva un paso más cerca de descubrir algunos de los misterios más esquivos del Universo.
La espectacular cúpula del ELT empieza a tomar forma. La inmensa estructura tendrá unos 80 metros de altura, con un diámetro de unos 88 metros, aproximadamente equivalente al área de un campo de fútbol. A la izquierda se pueden ver los andamios y el primer encofrado de la plataforma de la cúpula. Esta plataforma estará rodeada por un edificio auxiliar circular y su cimentación de hormigón está casi completa. Aquí es donde se alojarán las diversas plantas eléctricas, térmicas e hidráulicas utilizadas para operar el ELT. Toda la estructura descansará sobre amortiguadores, ya instalados y alineados, para protegerse contra grandes terremotos y otras vibraciones.
Frente a la cúpula, junto al lugar donde estará la entrada, el observador que agudice la mirada podrá ver un pozo profundo que albergará una torre especial para probar y calibrar el espejo M4 del telescopio. Este espejo, que es un componente fundamental del sistema de óptica adaptativa del ELT, se puede deformar rápidamente para corregir las turbulencias de la atmósfera de la Tierra, así como las vibraciones causadas por el movimiento del telescopio y el viento. Cuando esté terminado, este será el espejo adaptativo más grande jamás hecho para un telescopio, lo que permitirá al ELT de ESO ver el Universo con un detalle sin precedentes.
