“Alas para la ciencia” vuela sobre APEX
En lo alto del Llano de Chajnantor, en la región chilena de Atacama, a la impresionante altitud de 5.100 metros, ESO opera el Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope, APEX. APEX es un experimento para ALMA, el Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, un revolucionario telescopio que ESO, junto con sus socios internacionales, ha construido cerca de APEX en el Llano de Chajnantor. APEX está basado en una antena prototipo de 12 metros construida para el proyecto ALMA, y está localizando muchos objetos que ALMA podrá estudiar con mucho más detalle.
Esta espectacular imagen aérea fue tomada en diciembre de 2012 por Clémentine Bacri y Adrien Normier, los dos miembros de la tripulación de la organización sin ánimo de lucro el proyecto ORA Wings for Science (ORA alas para la ciencia), quienes pilotan un ultraligero especial, respetuoso con el medio ambiente, en un viaje de un año que les ha llevado por todo el mundo. Durante su viaje, han ayudado a los científicos proporcionándoles capacidades aéreas que van desde el apoyo en tareas de toma de muestras de aire hasta arqueología, observación de la biodiversidad y modelado 3D de terrenos.
ESO mantiene una colaboración para hacer divulgación con el proyecto ORA Wings for Science. Las películas cortas e impresionantes imágenes producidas durante sus vuelos se utilizan con finalidades educativas y para promocionar la investigación local. Su circumnavegación comenzó en junio de 2012 y finalizó el 17 de junio de 2013 con un aterrizaje en el espectáculo Paris Air Show.

APEX es una colaboración entre el Instituto Max Planck de Radioastronomía (MPIfR), el Observatorio Espacial de Onsala (OSO), y ESO, que a su vez se hace cargo de las operaciones.
El Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), una instalación astronómica internacional, es una colaboración entre Europa, América del Norte y Asia Oriental en cooperación con la República de Chile. La construcción y operaciones de ALMA en Europa están lideradas por ESO, en América del Norte por el National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), y en Asia Oriental por el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Japón (NAOJ). El Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) proporciona al proyecto la unificación tanto del liderazgo como de la gestión de la construcción, puesta a punto y operación de ALMA.
