Trabajando en ALMA, Día y Noche
En las colinas de los Andes chilenos, a una altura de 2900 metros, el Centro de Apoyo a las Operaciones (OSF por su sigla en inglés) para el Gran Conjunto Milimétrico/submilimétrico de Atacama (ALMA) es un enjambre de actividad. Esta fotografía muestra a ingenieros moviendo una antena de peso pesado de noche – con la ayuda de un transportador especial de 28 ruedas – e ilustra como el trabajo en ALMA se mantiene durante 24 horas. La antena, una de 25 proporcionada por ESO para el proyecto ALMA, está siendo movida a su posición cerca de las antenas de los otros socios de ALMA para ser probada y equipada con detectores altamente sensibles.
Cuando esté terminado, ALMA consistirá de 66 antenas de 12 y 7 metros que trabajarán juntas como un radio telescopio gigante, observando a longitudes de onda milimétricas y submilimétricas. La instalación permitirá a los astrónomos estudiar nuestros orígenes cósmicos al investigar las primeras estrellas y galaxias, y fotografiando la formación de planetas.
El telescopio está siendo construído en el Llano de Chajnantor, una meseta que queda a una distancia de 28 kilómetros del OSF, a una altura aún mayor de 5000 kilómetros. Desde que la fotografía fue tomada, esta antena se ha unido a otras en Chajnantor y ha estado formando parte de las primeras observaciones científicas de ALMA.
Mientras que la elevación de la meseta le da condiciones extremadamente secas que son vitales para observar a longitudes de onda milimétrica y submilimétrica, la altura la hace menos agradable para la gente que trabaja ahí. Por lo tanto, las personas que trabajan en ALMA hacen lo más que pueden en el OSF a menor altura, donde el trabajo continúa día y noche. No sólo los astrónomos e ingenieros trabajan en turnos y controlan remotamente el telescopio en Chajnantor, sino que también es ahí donde las antenas son montadas y probadas, y a donde se las trae de tanto en tanto para su mantenimiento.
ALMA, una instalación internacional de astronomía, es una sociedad entre Europa, América del Norte y Asia del Este en cooperación con la República de Chile. La construcción y operaciones de ALMA son dirigidas por ESO en nombre de Europa, por el Observatorio Nacional de Radio Astronomía (NRAO) en nombre de Norteamérica, y por el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Japón (NAOJ) en nombre de Asia del Este. El Observatorio Conjunto ALMA (JAO) proporciona el liderazgo unificado y administración de la construcción, comisionado y operación de ALMA.
