La Galaxia del Presidente Checo
Esta nueva fotografía de la galaxia espiral NGC 3244 fue tomada con la ayuda del Presidente de la República Checa, Václav Klaus, durante su visita al Observatorio Paranal de ESO [1], en la noche del 6 de Abril de 2011. La República Checa se unió a ESO en 2007, y esta fue la primera visita del Presidente del país a un emplazamiento de ESO.
Esta galaxia, que fue descubierta el 27 de Junio de 2010, ha atraído considerable interés de los astrónomos a través de los últimos nueve meses, gracias a la muerte violenta de una de sus estrellas. Esta explosión de supernova, ahora conocida como Supernova 2010ev (SN 2010ev), aún es visible como el –ahora tenue – punto azul anidado dentro de uno de los brazos espiral justo debajo del núcleo de la galaxia.
Sobre la galaxia, una estrella más o menos anónima en el primer plano de nuestra propia Vía Láctea, TYC 7713-527-1, alumbra con suficiente brillo para captar nuestra atención. A pesar de que la estrella parece mucho más brillante que SN 2010ev, esto en realidad es una ilusión creada por la gran diferencia en las distancias entre los dos objetos. La galaxia está mucho más lejos, a una distancia de más de 100 millones de años-luz, mientras que la estrella está ubicada mucho más cerca, dentro de nuestra propia galaxia.
En su máximo brillo, SN 2010ev alcanzó una magnitud aparente de alrededor de 14, haciéndola unas 1000 veces más tenue que lo que el ojo puede ver a simple vista, pero aún así era la tercera supernova más brillante observada en 2010. De hecho, si la supernova hubiera estado tan cerca de la Tierra como TYC 7713-527-1, habría sido facilmente visible a simple vista, a diferencia de la estrella antes mencionada.
La fotografía fue tomada empleando el instrumento FORS2 en el Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO. Los filtros usados para la fotografía fueron B, V y R, que estaban coloreados azul, verde y rojo respectivamente. Una copia enmarcada de la Galaxia del Presidente le fue presentada a Václav Klaus, como un recuerdo de su visita a Paranal.
