Nube de gas desgarrada por el agujero negro del centro de la Vía Láctea
Nuevas observaciones llevadas a cabo con el telescopio VLT (Very Large Telescope) de ESO muestran, por primera vez, cómo se desgarra una nube de gas que pasa cerca del agujero negro supermasivo situado en el centro de la galaxia. Aquí vemos observaciones del VLT llevadas a cabo en los años 2006, 2010 y 2013, coloreadas en azul, verde y rojo respectivamente.
Debido a la distancia y al hecho de que vemos la órbita con un ángulo inclinado a medida que la nube cae hacia el agujero negro, en esta imagen solo podemos distinguir la posición, y no la forma de la nube. El estiramiento de la nube se detecta en observaciones donde se capta su velocidad, lo cual permite a los astrónomos comprender en qué lugar de la órbita se encuentran ahora las diferentes partes de la nube.
