Récord de estudios con datos del Observatorio Europeo Austral (ESO) publicados en 2021

El año pasado se batió un récord en las investigaciones basadas en información proveniente de observatorios ESO. Un informe reciente del ESO Library and Information Centre muestra que, solo en 2021, se publicaron más de 1.100 artículos con datos obtenidos por ESO, hasta ahora el número anual más alto de publicaciones con datos de telescopios ESO.

La contribución más importante a estas publicaciones proviene del Very Large Telescope (VLT) y del Interferómetro del VLT (VLTI) de ESO, que arrojaron datos que se incluyeron en más de 600 estudios. El Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) sigue siendo uno de los instrumentos más productivos del VLT, al haber proporcionado datos para más de 160 artículos en 2021. Este año también ha habido un marcado aumento en artículos que usan datos del instrumento GRAVITY instalado en el VLTI. Dentro de lo más destacado de estas instalaciones se incluye el descubrimiento, mediante MUSE, de la pareja de agujeros negros supermasivos más cercana hallada hasta el momento e investigaciones respecto de las causas de la disminución del brillo de Betelgeuse, que se basan en datos de GRAVITY así como en observaciones del instrumento SPHERE del VLT.

Sobre la base de datos provenientes de los telescopios de rastreo en el Observatorio Paranal de ESO en el norte de Chile, del Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) y del VLT Survey Telescope (VST), se publicaron casi 190 artículos en 2021, un aumento respecto de años anteriores. Aproximadamente la mitad de estos papers (46%) usaron datos obtenidos desde el Archivo Científico de ESO, lo cual recalca el valor de los sondeos públicos de ESO para la comunidad astronómica en general.

En 2021, el conjunto Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), del que ESO es socio, entregó datos para la mayor cantidad de artículos científicos registrada hasta ahora. Asimismo, un 45% de ellos (más de 210 estudios) utilizaron datos obtenidos durante el tiempo de observación en ALMA para Europa, entre los que se encuentra la publicación sobre la medición por primera vez de potentes vientos estratosféricos en Júpiter, de marzo de 2021.

ESO también es socio en el Experimento Pionero de Atacama (APEX, por sus siglas en inglés), que se encuentra cerca de ALMA, en el Llano de Chajnantor, en la Región de Atacama. En 2021, las observaciones realizadas durante el tiempo de observación ESO del APEX contribuyeron a 35 artículos científicos, más de la mitad (57%) de los estudios de todo el tiempo de observación del APEX.

En línea con años anteriores, las observaciones realizadas en La Silla sirvieron para aproximadamente 200 artículos científicos. De hecho, los datos de algunos instrumentos dados de baja hace años siguen contribuyendo activamente al conjunto de artículos sobre datos.

El número de artículos que utilizan parcial o exclusivamente datos de archivo ha seguido aumentando en los últimos años, y corresponden al 38% de la totalidad de los estudios realizados en 2021. Casi un cuarto de los artículos publicados el año pasado (23%) utilizó solamente datos de observación de archivo de ESO, lo que pone de manifiesto que las observaciones anteriores continúan siendo útiles para los astrónomos y son un aporte para la investigación científica.

Estas cifras inéditas destacan el importante rol de ESO al ayudar a los astrónomos a entender mejor el Universo.
