ESO y ESA confirman que el asteroide 2006 QV89 no chocará contra la Tierra en 2019

El asteroide 2006 QV89, un pequeño objeto de 20 a 50 metros de diámetro, apareció últimamente en las noticias debido a una muy pequeña posibilidad de impacto en la Tierra, de 1 entre 7.000, el 9 de septiembre de 2019. En el primer caso conocido de descartar un impacto de asteroide a través de una "no detección", el Observatorio Europeo Austral (ESO) y la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) han llegado a la conclusión de que el asteroide 2006 QV89 no está en curso de colisión este año.

En general, cuando se descubre que un asteroide tiene incluso una pequeña posibilidad de impactar la Tierra, se realizan observaciones y mediciones adicionales. Estos datos “astrométricos” perfeccionan nuestro conocimiento sobre el camino del asteroide, mejorando nuestra comprensión sobre el riesgo que representa, y a menudo excluyendo totalmente cualquier posibilidad de colisión con la Tierra.

Sin embargo, el caso del asteroide 2006 QV89 es especial. El objeto fue descubierto en agosto de 2006, y luego fue observado por solo diez días. Estas observaciones indicaron que la posibilidad de impactar la Tierra era de 1 entre 7.000 el 9 de septiembre de 2019. Luego del décimo día, el asteroide se volvió inobservable y no ha sido visto desde entonces. Actualmente, tras más de una década, podemos predecir su posición con muy poca precisión. Como resultado, es extremadamente difícil para los astrónomos volver a observarlo, ya que nadie sabe exactamente dónde apuntar un telescopio.

Sin embargo, hay una manera de obtener la información necesaria. Si bien no conocemos exactamente la trayectoria de 2006 QV89, sí sabemos dónde aparecería en el cielo si estuviera en curso de colisión con nuestro planeta. Por lo tanto, podemos simplemente observar esta pequeña área del cielo para comprobar que el asteroide, de hecho, afortunadamente, no está ahí.  De esta manera, tenemos la oportunidad de excluir indirectamente cualquier riesgo de impacto, incluso sin ver realmente el asteroide.

Esto es precisamente lo que hicieron ESO y ESA el 4 y 5 de julio, como parte de la colaboración en curso entre las dos organizaciones para observar asteroides de alto riesgo utilizando el Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO. El equipo obtuvo imágenes muy "profundas" de un área pequeña en el cielo, donde el asteroide habría sido localizado si estuviera en camino de impactar la Tierra en septiembre. No se observó nada.

La imagen de arriba muestra la región del cielo donde se habría visto el asteroide 2006 QV89 si hubiera estado en un curso de colisión con la Tierra este año. Las tres cruces rojas revelan los lugares específicos donde el asteroide podría haber aparecido como una fuente única, grande, negra y redonda, si hubiese estado en curso de colisión. Incluso si el asteroide fuera más pequeño de lo previsto, de solo unos pocos metros de diámetro, se hubiera visto en la imagen. Cualquier tamaño menor que este, no hubiera podido ser detectado por el VLT, pero esto no revestiría ningún peligro ya que cualquier asteroide de ese tamaño se quemaría en la atmósfera de la Tierra.
