Maak kennis met METIS, een multifunctioneel instrument voor de ELT (Engelstalig)

METIS zal een van de eerste-generatie-instrumenten van ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) zijn. METIS staat voor Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, maar verwijst tevens naar de Griekse godin van de wijsheid. Het instrument zal de hemel op infrarode golflengten waarnemen om een breed scala aan wetenschappelijke doelen te bestuderen – van objecten binnen ons zonnestelsel tot verre sterrenstelsels. Deze documentaire laat zien hoe METIS werkt, hoe uitdagend het ontwerpen van zo’n complex instrument is, en hoe het instrument ons begrip van de kosmos zal veranderen als het eenmaal operationeel is op de ELT.
