The problem of expanding a mirror to greater size

This sequence shows what would happen if the design of the ESO 3.6-metre telescope mirror, a rigid thick mirror, were to be expanded to the size of the VLT 8.2-metre mirrors. The thickness of the resultant mirror would make it extremely heavy and almost impossible to manufacture, transport and support.
