Europese antennes op ALMA’s Operations Support Facility
Deze foto toont antennes die onderdeel gaan uitmaken van de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). De drie antennes op de voorgrond en enkeleop de achtergrond worden door ESO geleverd als onderdeel van haar bijdrage aan ALMA. De bouw wordt verzorgd door het Europese AEM Consortium [1]. ESO levert vijfentwintig van de 12-meter-diameter antennes. Nog eens vijfentwintig 12-meter antennes worden geleverd door de Noord-Amerikaanse ALMA partner. De overige, een set van twaalf 7-meter en vier 12-meter antennes die samen de de Atacama Compact Array vormen, zijn afkomstig van de Oost-Aziatische ALMA partner.
De antennes op de foto staan bij de ALMA Operations Support Facility (OSF) op een hoogte van 2900 meter aan de voet van de Chileense Andes. Op de voorgrond zie je de 'AEM Site Erection Facility' waar de antennes gemonteerd en uitvoerig getest worden voor de overdracht aan het observatorium. De antennes op de achtergrond zijn al overgedragen en ondergaan verdere tests of worden afgemonteerd met hun gevoelige ontvangers. Zodra de antennes klaar zijn, worden ze naar 5000 meter hoogte gebracht, naar de Array Operations Site op het Chajnantor plateau. Daar voegen ze zich bij hun al aanwezige 'collega's' en vormen samen de ALMA-array, met als doel om de meest fundamentele vragen rond onze kosmische oorsprong te beantwoorden. Ook als alle antennes klaar zijn zal het OSF het centrum voor de dagelijkse werking van ALMA blijven met werkplekken voor astronomen en het onderhoudsteam van het observatorium.
Aan de horizon ligt het Andesgebergte. De hoogste piek die het landschap domineert is de kegelvormige vulkaan Licancabur die het grensgebied tussen Chili en Bolivia markeert.
Het ALMA-project is een samenwerkingsverband tussen Europa, Noord-Amerika en Oost-Azië. De bouw en het beheer van ALMA staan namens Europa onder leiding van ESO, namens Noord-Amerika van het National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) en namens Oost-Azië door de National Astronomical Observatory van Japan (NAOJ). De Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) ziet toe op de bouw, de ingebruikname en het beheer van ALMA
