Sterren cirkelen boven de Residencia op Cerro Paranal
Deze foto van de nachtelijke hemel boven de "Residencia" -het medewerkersverblijf op ESO's Paranal-observatorium in Chili- is van ESO Photo Ambassador Farid Char en geeft een prachtig dynamisch beeld van een hemel gevuld met sterren.
Om de wervelende sterrensporen vast te leggen gebruikte Farid een belichtingstijd van 30 minuten. Hierdoor wordt de beweging zichtbaar die sterren langs de hemel maken door de rotatie van de aarde. In het centrum ligt het schijnbaar stilstaande punt van de zuidelijke hemelpool. Aan de linkerkant, en bovenkant van het beeld, vervaagt zowel de Grote als de Kleine Magelhaense Wolk, twee naburige sterrenstelsels van onze Melkweg.
De donkere glazen koepel onder de cirkelende sterren maakt deel uit van het dak van het Residencia. Dit unieke, deels ondergronds gelegen gebouw is sinds 2002 in gebruik en biedt onderdak aan de wetenschappers en ingenieurs die bij het observatorium werken. De 35 meter brede koepel zorgt ervoor dat er, gedurende de dag, natuurlijk daglicht in het gebouw is.
Bij het observatorium, dat ligt op een 2600 meter hoge bergtop in de droge Atacama-woestijn, eisen de uitstekende astronomische omstandigheden hun tol. De medewerkers daar worden overdag geconfronteerd met intensief zonlicht, een zeer lage luchtvochtigheid en kortademigheid door de ijle lucht op deze hoogte. Om hen te helpen ontspannen en te hydrateren na een lange dienst op de bergtop is er een kunstmatige oase in de Residencia met een kleine tuin, een zwembad dat tevens zorgt voor de juiste luchtvochtigheid, een lounge, een restaurant en andere recreatieve voorzieningen. Het gebouw kan meer dan 100 mensen huisvesten.
