Een intergalactische zwaargewicht
Deze deep-field-afbeelding toont wat bekend staat als een supercluster van sterrenstelsels: een gigantische groep van sterrenstelselclusters die zelf ook geclusterd zijn. Dit cluster, Abell 901/902, omvat drie afzonderlijke, grote clusters en een aantal filamenten van sterrenstelsels, wat vaker voorkomt bij zulke superstructuren. Een cluster, Abell 901a, is bovenaan en net aan de rechterkant van de prominente, rode ster in het midden te zien. Een andere, Abell 901b, staat verder naar rechts en iets lager dan Abell 901a. Het cluster Abell 902 tenslotte, staat direct onder de rode ster, richting de onderkant van het beeld.
De Abell 901/902 supercluster ligt op iets meer dan twee miljard lichtjaar van de aarde, en bevat honderden melkwegstelsels in een gebied met een doorsnede van ongeveer zestien miljoen lichtjaar. Ter vergelijking: de Lokale Groep - een cluster van sterrenstelsels die naast onze Melkweg vijftig andere stelsels omvat - meet ongeveer tien miljoen lichtjaar in doorsnede.
Deze foto werd genomen door de Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera op de MPG / ESO 2,2-meter telescoop, die op het La Silla Observatorium in Chili staat. Met behulp van gegevens van de WFI en van de NASA / ESA Hubble Ruimtetelescoop, werd het in 2008 mogelijk voor astronomen om de verdeling van donkere materie in de supercluster nauwkeurig in kaart te brengen. Hieruit blijkt dat de clusters en individuele sterrenstelsels zich in grote klompen van donkere materie bevinden. Om deze ontdekking te doen, hebben astronomen gekeken naar de manier waarop het licht van 60.000 verre sterrenstelsels achter de supercluster werd verstoord door de zwaartekracht van de donkere materie in de cluster, om zo de verdeling ervan te onthullen. De massa van de vier belangrijkste donkerematerieklonten van Abell 901/902 wordt geschat op zo'n tien biljoen keer die van de zon is.
De waarnemingen die hier worden getoond, zijn onderdeel van de COMBO-17-survey. Dit is een survey van de hemel dat in 17 verschillende optische filters met behulp van de WFI-camera wordt uitgevoerd. Het COMBO-17-project heeft tot nu toe meer dan 25.000 sterrenstelsels gevonden.
