ESO Photo Ambassadeur, Babak Tafreshi verzamelde een schat aan ver weg gelegen objecten in deze opname van de hemel boven ESO's Paranal observatorium.
In het midden van het beeld is de Carinanevel met zijn intens rode gloed wel het meest opvallend. Deze nevel ligt in het sterrenbeeld Carina (Kiel), op ongeveer 7500 lichtjaar van de aarde. De wolk van gloeiend gas en stof is de helderste nevel aan de hemel en bevat een aantal van de helderste en meest zware sterren die er in de Melkweg aanwezig zijn, zoals Eta Carinae. De Carinanevel is voor astronomen een perfect gebied om de geheimen van de gewelddadige geboorte en dood van massieve sterren te bestuderen. Kijk voor een aantal mooie recente ESO-beelden van de Carinanevel eens naar eso1208, eso1145 en eso1031.
Onder de Carinanevel, zien we wat ook wel het "Wensput Cluster" wordt genoemd. (Whising well cluster NGC 3532). Dit open cluster van jonge sterren heet zo omdat het, gezien door het oculair van een telescoop lijkt op een handvol twinkelende zilveren munten op de bodem van een wensput. Verder naar rechts vinden we de Lambda Centauri Nevel (IC 2944), een wolk van gloeiend waterstofgas en pasgeboren sterren die soms ook wel de "Rennende-Kipnevel" genoemd wordt, omdat sommigen in het helderste deel van de nevel een vogelvorm herkennen. (zie eso1135). Boven deze nevel en iets naar links tot slot, de Zuidelijke Pleiaden (IC 2632), een open cluster van sterren dat vergelijkbaar is met zijn bekende noordelijke naamgenoot.
Op de voorgrond zien we drie van de vier hulptelescopen (ATs) van de Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Met behulp van de VLTI, kunnen de de ATs - de VLT's 8,2-meter telescopen - samen worden gebruikt als één enkele gigantische telescoop, die fijnere details ziet dan mogelijk zou zijn met de individuele telescopen. De VLTI is gebruikt voor een breed scala aan onderzoeken. Waaronder de studie van protoplanetaire schijven rond jonge stellaire objecten en van actieve sterrenstelsels, een van de meest energierijke en mysterieuze fenomenen in het heelal.
