De maan en de boog van de Melkweg
Eso fotograaf Stephane Guisard maakte in de Chileense Andes dit verbazingwekkende panorama van de plek waar ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submilimeter Array) staat. Het 5000 meter hoge en extreem droge Chajnantor-plateau biedt de perfecte plaats voor deze state-of-the-art telescoop, die het heelal bestudeert in licht uit het millimeter en submillimeter golflengtegebied.
Tal van reusachtige antennes domineren het midden van de foto. Als ALMA voltooid is, staan er 54 van deze 12-meter schotels. Daarboven doet de boogvormige Melkweg dienst als schitterend decor. Toen dit panorama gemaakt werd, stond de maan dicht bij het centrum van de Melkweg waardoor de antennes baden in een spookachtige, nachtelijke gloed. De grote en kleine Magelhaense Wolken, de grootste van de dwergsterrenstelses die onze melkweg vergezellen, zijn links aan de hemel zichtbaar als twee lichte vlekken. Een bijzonder heldere meteoor trekt een lichtspoor in de buurt van de Kleine Magelhaense wolk.
Rechts staan een aantal kleinere 7-meter ALMA-antennes. Twaalf stuks vormen straks de Atacama Compact Array. Nog verder naar rechts schijnen de lichten van de Array Operations Site Technical Building en tot slot, achter de gebouwen, dreigt de donkere top van Cerro Chajnantor.
ALMA, een internationale astronomische faciliteit, is een samenwerkingsverband van Europa, Noord-Amerika en Oost-Azië, in samenwerking met Chili. De constructie en het gebruik van ALMA worden namens Europa geleid door ESO, namens Noord-Amerika door de National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) en namens Oost-Azië door de National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). De Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) leidt de samenwerking in goede banen en overziet de constructie, de commissioning en het gebruik van ALMA.
