La Silla aerial view

Under a blue sky filled with wispy white clouds lie rolling brown hills, stretching off into the distance. Along the ridge of the closest and most central hill, which stretches directly away from the camera, are several white telescope domes, interconnected by small, grey roads. The closest dome sits slightly left of centre in the image, on the highest peak of the hill.

Aerial view of La Silla Observatory, ESO's original observing site. It is located at the outskirts of the Chilean Atacama Desert, 600 km north of Santiago de Chile and at an altitude of 2400 metres.
