Opnamen in gepolariseerd licht van het superzware zwarte gat in M87 en de bijbehorende jet
Deze compositiefoto toont drie opnamen in gepolariseerd licht van het centrale deel van het sterrenstelsel Messier 87 (M87). Het stelsel heeft een superzwaar zwart gat in zijn centrum en is beroemd om zijn jets, die zich tot ver buiten het stelsel uitstrekken.
Een van de opnamen in gepolariseerd licht, verkregen met de in Chili gebaseerde Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), waarin ESO partner is, toont een deel van de jet in gepolariseerd licht. Deze opname legt het deel van de 6000 lichtjaar lange jet vast dat zich dichter bij de kern van het stelsel bevindt.
De andere opnamen in gepolariseerd licht zoomen verder in op het superzware zwarte gat: de middelste foto bestrijkt een gebied van ongeveer een lichtjaar en is verkregen met de Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) van de National Radio Astronomy Observatory in de VS.
De meest ingezoomde opname is verkregen door acht telescopen, verspreid over de hele wereld, met elkaar te verbinden tot een virtuele telescoop ter grootte van de aarde: de Event Horizon Telescope of EHT. Daarmee kunnen astronomen tot heel dicht bij het superzware zwarte gat kijken – het gebied waar de jets worden ‘gelanceerd’.
De lijnen geven de oriëntatie aan van de polarisatie, die verband houdt met het magnetische veld in de afgebeelde gebieden. De ALMA-data verschaffen een beschrijving van de structuur van het magnetische veld langs de jet. Dankzij de gezamenlijke informatie van de EHT en ALMA kunnen astronomen onderzoeken welke rol magnetische velden in de omgeving van de waarnemingshorizon (onderzocht met de EHT) en langs de krachtige jets van M87 (onderzocht met ALMA) spelen.
De getallen in GHz verwijzen naar de frequenties van het licht dat bij de verschillende waarnemingen is vastgelegd. De horizontale lijnen geven de schalen (in lichtjaren) aan van de afzonderlijke opnamen.
