Artist's rendering of the ELT in operation
The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is currently under construction at Cerro Armazones in Chile's Atacama Desert. Its 39-metre diameter mirror will have 15 times the light collecting power of current ground-based telescopes, and will be by far the world's largest optical/near-infrared telescope when completed.
