Het bouwen van VISTA, 's werelds grootste surveytelescoop
ESO wordt dit jaar 50. En om deze belangrijke verjaardag te vieren, geven we u een inkijkje in onze geschiedenis. In 2012 tonen we eens per maand een speciale 'Toen en Nu'-vergelijking als foto van de week. We laten zien wat er de afgelopen decennia is veranderd op de sterrenwachten La Silla en Paranal, de ESO-kantoren in Santiago en het hoofdkwartier in Garching bij München, in Duitsland.
Sinds december 2009 is de Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) bezig met het in kaart brengen van de zuidelijke hemel vanuit ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chili. Onze foto’s van deze maand tonen de VISTA-telescoop tijdens de bouw en in de huidige tijd.
Het historische beeld, genomen in de tweede helft van 2004, toont het telescoopgebouw in aanbouw. Het skelet van de telescoopbehuizing is zichtbaar op de ronde voet, omgeving door een tijdelijke kooi van steigerwerk. VISTA is gevestigd op een piek op ongeveer 1500 meter ten noordoosten van Cerro Paranal, de locatie van de Very Large Telescope. Deze piek is vijf meter verlaagd tot een hoogte van 2518 meter, waardoor een platform van 4000 vierkante meter voor de noodzakelijke bouwwerkzaamheden kon worden gerealiseerd.
De foto van vandaag de dag toont de voltooide VISTA-telescoop. De behuizing van de telescoop is een gebouw met een doorsnede van twintig meter en beschermt de telescoop tegen invloeden van buitenaf. Twee schuifdeuren vormen de opening waardoor er met de telescoop geobserveerd wordt, waarbij een windscherm uitgeklapt kan worden om een gedeelte van de opening af te sluiten als dat nodig is. Extra deuren in de behuizing zorgen voor ventilatie om de luchtstroom tijdens de nacht te beheersen. Een bijgebouw, naast de behuizing zichtbaar op de voorgrond, bevat onderhoudsmateriaal en coating-apparatuur die gebruik wordt om de dunne, reflecterende zilvercoating aan te brengen op de spiegels van de telescoop.
VISTA werkt in bijna-infrarode golflengten, met een drie ton zware, 67-megapixel camera. De grote spiegel, een breed gezichtsveld en de zeer gevoelige infrarood-detectoren maken het 's werelds grootste surveytelescoop.
VISTA is ontworpen door een consortium van 18 universiteiten in Groot-Brittannië, onder leiding van Queen Mary University in Londen en maakt deel uit van een bijdrage in natura aan ESO als onderdeel van de Britse toetredingsovereenkomst. De Britse Science and Technology Facilities Council's (SFTC) en Astronomy Technology Centre (STFC, UK ATC) deden het projectmanagement van het ontwerp en de bouw van de telescoop.
