ESO's 3.6-metre telescope, home of planet hunters
The 3.6-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile is home to one of the most successful planet-hunting instruments in the world, the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS). In mid-2022, a new instrument installed on the same telescope saw first light: the Near InfraRed Planet Searcher (NIRPS). NIRPS joins HARPS in the search for planets, with a focus on rocky worlds orbiting red dwarf stars.
