Tijdcapsule begraven bij ESO's Extremely Large Telescope

Vorige week werd tijdens een ceremonie op de bouwplaats van ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), op Cerro Armazones in de Chileense Atacama-woestijn, een tijdcapsule begraven ter vereeuwiging van ESO-personeel, wetenschap, technologie en samenwerking tussen ESO en Chili.
De capsule werd in 2017 verzegeld tijdens de eerste steenlegging, toen de bouw van het toekomstige " 's werelds grootste oog op de hemel" begon. De capsule dient als een symbolische boodschap aan toekomstige generaties en bevat aandenkens van Chileense autoriteiten. Er zit onder andere een plaquette bij van de toenmalige president van Chili, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, over het openen van de nationale hemel voor de vragen van een hele planeet. Ook bevat de capsule tekeningen van Chileense kinderen met het heelal, ESO-telescopen en landschappen in het noorden van Chili. De capsule verder een mozaïek van foto's van ESO-medewerkers en een exemplaar van een boek dat de toekomstige wetenschappelijke doelen van de telescoop beschrijft [1]. De capsule is versierd met een gegraveerde zeshoek van Zerodur®, een model op een schaal van 1 op 5 van een van de primaire spiegelsegmenten van de ELT.
Vorige week brachten leden en medewerkers van de ESO-Raad een bezoek aan de ELT-locatie om de capsule in de muur van de ELT-koepel te begraven. Dat gebeurde tijdens een bijeenkomst onder leiding van Linda Tacconi (Duitsland), voorzitter, en Mirjam Lieshout-Vijverberg (Nederland), vicevoorzitter. Een paar dagen later installeerde een tweede groep Raadsleden onder leiding van Rafael Bachiller (Spanje) en Jan Buriánek (Tsjechië) een gedenkplaat op de muur waar de capsule begraven is.
Onlangs bereikte de bouw van de ELT 50% van de voltooiing. Daarmee is de telescoop goed op weg om later dit decennium te beginnen met waarnemingen.
Het begraven van de tijdcapsule vindt plaats in het jaar waarin de ESO en Chili vieren dat ze 60-jaar geleden een partnerschap aangingen waardoor unieke observatoria konden worden gebouwd in de Atacama-woestijn en waardoor een sterke wetenschappelijke gemeenschap kon ontstaan.
De ELT, de grootste optische en infraroodtelescoop ter wereld, zal ons begrip van het heelal veranderen. De wetenschappelijke doelen variëren van het zonnestelsel tot de rand van het waarneembare heelal, inclusief exoplaneten, zwarte gaten en de eerste sterren en sterrenstelsels. Er wordt gezocht naar antwoorden op enkele van de grootste open vragen in de sterrenkunde: is er leven elders in het heelal? Wat is de aard van donkere materie en donkere energie? Zijn de natuurwetten universeel? Wellicht worden ook nog onbekende vragen beantwoord. En wie weet wat de ELT ontdekt heeft tegen de tijd dat de capsule wordt geopend.
