Des fondations extrêmement solides
La construction du plus grand œil vers le ciel au monde, l'Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de l'ESO, progresse ! Après un ralentissement important des travaux de construction dû à la pandémie COVID-19 - dont près d'un an de fermeture complète du site - les travaux ont repris à la mi-2021. Comme le montre cette image datant de janvier 2022, les fondations du gigantesque télescope de 39 m ont été posées, ce qui nous rapproche un peu plus de la découverte de certains des mystères les plus insaisissables de l’univers.
Les premières formes du spectaculaire dôme du ELT prennent forme. L'immense structure fera environ 80 mètres de haut pour un diamètre de 88 mètres, soit l'équivalent d'un terrain de football. À gauche, vous pouvez voir les échafaudages et le premier coffrage de la pile du dôme. Le pilier sera entouré d'un bâtiment auxiliaire circulaire, et sa fondation en béton est presque terminée. Les différentes installations électriques, thermiques et hydrauliques utilisées pour le fonctionnement de l'ELT y seront logées. L'ensemble de la structure reposera sur des amortisseurs de chocs, déjà installés et alignés, afin de la protéger contre les tremblements de terre et autres vibrations importantes.
Devant le dôme, à côté de l'entrée, un observateur attentif peut apercevoir une fosse profonde, qui accueillera une tour spéciale pour tester et calibrer le miroir M4 du télescope. Ce miroir, qui est un composant fondamental du système d'optique adaptative de l'ELT, peut être rapidement déformé pour corriger les turbulences de l'atmosphère terrestre, ainsi que les vibrations causées par le mouvement du télescope et le vent. Une fois terminé, ce sera le plus grand miroir adaptatif jamais réalisé pour un télescope, permettant à l'ELT de l'ESO de voir l’univers avec des détails sans précédent.
