La nova au-dessus de la Supernova
Une pure coïncidence astronomique: une étoile explose en nova au-dessus du nouveau centre pour visiteurs et planétarium La Supernova , moins d’une semaine après son inauguration. Une image de la nova naine V392 Persei a été reprise par l’ambassadeur photographe d’ESO Petr Horálek le 2 mai 2018. Elle montre une vision à grand angle du ciel nocturne au-dessus le la Supernova d’ESO, vers le nord-ouest. La position de la nova au-dessus de la Supernova est indiquée sur cette large vue grâce au petit carré inséré qui montre une version agrandie de la région, prise avec le même appareil photographique, mais avec un différent objectif. Sur cette image la nova est facilement identifiable grâce à sa couleur orange.
Les novae naines sont la conséquence d’une étoile naine blanche qui accrète du matériel de son compagnon binaire de plus petite masse. La matériel du disque est comprimé lorsqu’il est transféré vers la surface de la naine blanche où il est chauffé et déclenche une puissante et brillante explosion. Le cas de nova V392 Persei est en fait un événement rare et beaucoup plus brillant. On connait seulement un autre cas dans l’histoire des observations de novas naines où l’étoile s’est transformée en une nova à part entière et bien plus brillante. Ce fut le cas de V1213 Centauri en 2009 et maintenant c’est le cas de V392 Persei.
Cette image est symbolique car le bâtiment de la Supernova d’ESO a été conçu pour ressembler à un système d’étoile double, très similaire au cas de la nova naine V392 Persei, qui finira en une explosion d’une des étoiles en supernova dans un brillant flash de lumière - ce qui explique l’origine de son nom.
