The Crab Nebula
The Crab Nebula (Messier 1), as observed by VIMOS. This well-known object is the remnant of a stellar explosion in the year 1054.
The image is a composite VRI image obtained on March 4, 2002. The individual exposures lasted 180 seconds; image quality 0.7 arcsec FWHM; field 7 x 7 arcmin2; North is up and East is left.
