Tränen am Himmel
Ist es ein Komet? Ist es ein Raumschiff? Das Objekt in diesem Bild der Woche ist auf den ersten Blick vielleicht etwas schwer zu erkennen. Es handelt sich tatsächlich um einen jungen Stern – aber warum hat er eine so ungewöhnliche Form?
Junge Sterne sind von einer Scheibe aus Gas und Staub umgeben: dem Baumaterial für Planeten. Wenn andere sehr helle und massereiche Sterne in der Nähe sind, heizt ihr Licht die Scheibe des jungen Sterns auf, wodurch ein Teil des Materials abgetragen wird. Das tropfenförmige Objekt auf diesem Bild, 177-341 W, befindet sich im Orionnebel. Die Sterne, die die Scheibe von 177-341 W abtragen, sind rechts oben außerhalb des Bildes. Wenn ihre Strahlung mit dem Material um den jungen Stern zusammenstößt, entsteht die helle, bogenförmige Struktur, die hier in Gelb zu sehen ist. Der Schweif, der sich vom Stern in Richtung der unteren linken Ecke erstreckt, ist Material, das von 177-341 W durch die Sterne aus dem Gesichtsfeld weggetragen wird. Diese Art von Objekten – ionisierte protoplanetare Scheiben – wird „Proplyds“ genannt.
Diese Studie unter der Leitung von Mari-Liis Aru (ESO), die mit dem Instrument Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) am Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO in Chile durchgeführt wurde, wird in einem neuen Fachartikel vorgestellt. Die in diesem Bild gezeigten Farben bilden verschiedene Elemente wie Wasserstoff, Stickstoff, Schwefel und Sauerstoff ab. Dies ist jedoch nur ein kleiner Teil der von MUSE gesammelten Daten, das Tausende von Bildern in verschiedenen Farben oder Wellenlängen gleichzeitig aufnimmt. Dadurch kann man die physikalischen Eigenschaften protoplanetarer Scheiben sehr detailliert untersuchen, einschließlich der Menge an Masse, die sie verlieren. In dieser neuen Veröffentlichung werden MUSE-Beobachtungen zahlreicher anderer Protoplaneten im Orion vorgestellt, die zu einem von Carlo F. Manara (ESO) geleiteten Projekt gehören. Dieses soll dazu beitragen, ein besseres Bild davon zu bekommen, wie sich Sterne und Planetensysteme in diesen stellaren Kinderstuben bilden.
