Ein intergalaktisches Schwergewicht
Diese Deep Field-Aufnahme zeigt eine sogenannten Galaxien-Superhaufen – eine riesige Gruppe von Galaxienhaufen, die gemeinsam wiederum eine Haufenstruktur bilden. Dieser Superhaufen, bekannt unter dem Namen Abell 901/902, besteht aus drei separaten Haupthaufen und einer größeren Anzahl von Galaxien-Filamenten, die typisch für solche Superstrukturen sind. Einer der Haufen, Abell 901a, ist etwas rechts von dem hellen roten Vordergrundstern nahe der Bildmitte zu sehen. Ein weiterer, Abell 901b, liegt nochmal weiter rechts von Abell 901a und etwas tiefer. Abschließend liegt der Haufen Abell 902 gerade unterhalb des roten Sterns in Richtung der unteren Bildkante.
Der Abell 901/902-Superhaufen liegt etwas weiter als 2 Milliarden Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt und enthält Hunderte von Galaxien in einer Region mit einem Durchmesser von 16 Millionen Lichtjahren. Zum Vergleich hat die lokale Gruppe, zu der auch unsere Milchstraße mit 50 weiteren Galaxien gehört, ungefähr einen Durchmesser von 10 Millionen Lichtjahren.
Dieses Bild wurde mit der Wide Field Imager (WFI)-Kamera am MPG/ESO 2,2-Meter- Teleskop aufgenommen, dass sich am La Silla-Observatorium in Chile befindet. Aus den WFI-Daten und weiteren Bildern vom NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope konnten Astronomen im Jahr 2008 eine Karte der Verteilung der Dunklen Materie in dem Superhaufen mit hoher Präzision erzeugen und damit zeigen, dass die Haufen und einzelnen Galaxien, die gemeinsam die Superstrukturen bilden, innerhalb enormer Verdichtungen Dunkler Materie liegen. Dafür untersuchten die Astronomen, wie das Licht durch den gravitativen Einfluss der im Haufen enthaltenen Dunklen Materie das Licht von 60.000 noch weiter entfernten Galaxien verformt und somit seine Verteilung verrät. Die Masse der vier größten Klumpen aus Dunkler Materie in Abell 901/902 wird auf über 10 Trillionen Sonnenmassen geschätzt.
Die hier gezeigten Beobachtungen sind Teil der COMBO-17-Durchmusterung, die mit 17 verschiedenen optischen Filtern der WFI-Kamera durchgeführt wurde. Das COMBO-17-Projekt hat bisher über 25000 Galaxien entdeckt.
