Die ESO tritt der European Open Science Cloud Association bei

In einem bedeutenden Schritt in Richtung Open Science ist die ESO offiziell der European Open Science Cloud Association (EOSC) als Mitglied beigetreten. Der Verein ist die juristische Person, die die EOSC leitet.
Die EOSC ist eine Initiative der Europäischen Kommission, die es „Forschern ermöglichen soll, alle Formen digitalen Wissens – wie Veröffentlichungen, Daten und Software – zu finden, zu erstellen, zu teilen und wiederzuverwenden, was zu neuen Erkenntnissen und Innovationen, höherer Forschungsproduktivität und verbesserter Reproduzierbarkeit in der Wissenschaft führt“, so die Worte von Mariya Gabriel, ehemaliges Kommissionsmitglied für Innovation, Forschung, Kultur, Bildung und Jugend. Die ESO unterstützt dies schon seit Langem, indem sie 2017 die EOSC-Erklärung befürwortet hat und sich weiterhin an ESCAPE beteiligt, einem Projekt, das aus der EOSC hervorgegangen ist und das Astronomie-, Astroteilchen- und Teilchenphysik-Gemeinschaften in Europa zusammenbringt, um Open Science zu unterstützen. Durch den Beitritt zur EOSC Association wird die ESO nun auch an deren Leitung beteiligt sein.
Die ESO blickt auf eine lange Tradition in entscheidenden Aspekten von Open Science zurück. Archive und Datenverarbeitungstools für die Observatorien La Silla Paranal und ALMA ermöglichen den Zugriff auf die gesamte Palette an Millimeter-, Infrarot- und optischen Beobachtungen und unterstützen die FAIR-Prinzipien, um die Daten auffindbar, zugänglich, interoperabel und wiederverwendbar zu machen [1] . Darüber hinaus unterstützt die ESO den offenen Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Publikationen durch die Zeitschrift Astronomy & Astrophysics, die in ihrem Namen herausgegeben wird.
Diese Grundsätze leiten die ESO in ihrer Führungsrolle bei der EOSC und unterstützen die wissenschaftliche Entwicklung über Disziplinen, Institute und Länder hinweg. Die ESO selbst ist ein Beweis für den wissenschaftlichen Nutzen der zwischenstaatlichen Zusammenarbeit und wird durch den Beitritt zur EOSC Association in ganz Europa und darüber hinaus Open Science fördern.
