Extrem starke Fundamente
Der Bau des Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) der ESO, des weltgrößten Auges in den Himmel, macht Fortschritte! Nach einer erheblichen Verzögerung der Arbeiten bedingt durch die COVID-19-Pandemie – einschließlich einer fast einjährigen Schließung der kompletten Baustelle – wurde der Bau Mitte 2021 fortgesetzt. Wie dieses Bild vom Januar 2022 zeigt, sind die Fundamente des gigantischen 39-Meter-Teleskops inzwischen gegossen, was uns einen Schritt der Entdeckung einiger der größten Geheimnisse des Universums näher bringt.
Die ersten Konturen der eindrucksvollen Kuppel des ELT nehmen Gestalt an. Diese immense Struktur wird etwa 80 Meter hoch sein, mit einem Durchmesser von über 88 Metern, in etwa die Größe eines Fußballplatzes. Links davon sieht man das Gerüst und die erste Verschalung der Kuppelringwand. Diese wird von einem kreisförmigen Gebäude mit Nebenräumen umschlossen sein und ihr Betonfundament ist fast fertig. Hier werden die verschiedenen Systeme für Elektrik, Hydraulik und Klima untergebracht. Die gesamte Struktur ruht auf Stoßdämpfern, die schon installiert und justiert sind, und die vor stärkeren Erdbeben und anderen Vibrationen schützen.
Vor der Kuppel, dort wo sich später der Eingang befinden wird, erkennt der aufmerksame Beobachter eine tiefe Grube, auf der ein spezieller Turm entsteht, mit dem der M4-Spiegel getestet und kalibriert wird. Dieser Spiegel, der ein wichtiges Element der adaptiven Optik des ELT darstellt, kann schnell verformt werden, um die Turbulenzen in der Erdatmosphäre und die Vibrationen des Teleskops durch seine Bewegung und den Wind auszugleichen. Nach seiner Fertigstellung wird es der größte je gebaute adaptive Teleskopspiegel sein, der dem ELT ermöglichen wird, das Universum in noch nie dagewesenem Detail zu untersuchen.
