Dieses Foto von ESO-Fotobotschafter Petr Horálek blickt vom Paranal-Observatorium der ESO aus nach Westen.
Das helle Objekt in der Bildmitte ist der Mond, etwas links darüber steht der Ringplanet Saturn, während der felsige Merkur links darunter zu sehen ist. Eine Konjunktion von Merkur und Saturn ist von verschiedenen Breiten aus nur schwer mit bloßem Auge zu sehen. Doch diese herrliche Aufnahme hat eine solche sehr schön eingefangen, trotz des recht hellen Mondes in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft. Die von Staubwolken durchzogene Milchstraße scheint den Himmel horizontal zu teilen, während kurz nach Sonnenuntergang der Himmel schon von Sternen gespickt ist. Viele bekannte Nebel sind in diesem kosmischen Vorhang zu erkennen, wie zum Beispiel der Lagunennebel, der Katzenpfotennebel und der Trifidnebel.
Die verschiedenen Teleskope, die man im Bild sieht, bilden zusammen das Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO, das weltweit fortschrittlichste Teleskop für Beobachtungen im sichtbaren und infraroten Spektralbereich. Das VLT besteht aus vier Hauptteleskopen mit je einem 8,2-Meter Spiegel sowie vier Hilfsteleskopen mit je einem 1,8-Meter Spiegel.
