Mounted image 105: APEX, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment, on Chajnantor
View of the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) antenna on the Chajnantor plain of the Chilean Andes, 5000 m above sea level. APEX is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institut für Radioastronomie, Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) and ESO. The telescope was manufactured by VERTEX Antennentechnik in Duisburg, Germany. Astronomers observing with APEX can see cold dust and gas in both the Milky Way and in distant galaxies.
