Metals in Sagittarius dwarf galaxy
This image shows a tiny portion of the spectrum of a giant star (V = 18.2) in the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy, as recorded by UVES. A total integration time of 3 hours covered the spectral range 480 - 680 nm and provided a S/N-ratio of approx. 40 at 600 nm. The figure shows transitions due to FeI, CaI and BaII and illustrates the wealth of different elements that can be accurately measured in an object as faint as this one.
