ALMA antennas from the air

Under a cloudy and whitish sky, a light caramel plateau spans across almost all of the image. The main characters of this aerial picture are ALMA’s white antennas, closely packed together on the plateau. The photo is taken from the front of the antennas, which are pointing towards the camera, like a group of friends randomly posing. Further away, there are some dark brown mountains closely packed together on the left. Meanwhile, on the right, an isolated massive mountain stands alone.

This image shows the antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in which ESO is a partner. The antennas, shown in a compact configuration in this photo, are located high up in the Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Atacama Desert.
