Star trails over the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope
This long exposure image shows the star trails over the various domes at the La Silla Observatory. In the foreground to the left the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope is visible — easy to identify by its silver shimmering dome.
This telescopes hosts some remarkable instruments, like the Wide Field Imager (WFI) Camera and GROND (Gamma-Ray Burst Optical/Near-Infrared Detector), which chases the afterglows of the most powerful explosions in the Universe, known as gamma-ray bursts.
