Meet METIS, a multi-tool instrument for the ELT

METIS will be one of the first-generation instruments of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, METIS stands for Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph. This instrument will observe the sky at infrared wavelengths to study a wide range of science topics, from objects in our Solar System to distant galaxies. This documentary will give you a unique behind-the-scenes look at how METIS works, the challenges of designing such a complex instrument, and how it will change our understanding of the cosmos once it’s operational at the ELT.
