Glänsande bild av en kosmisk skulptur

Idag har ESO släppt en dramatisk ny bild av NGC 346, det starkast lysande stjärnbildningsområdet i det Lilla magellanska molnet, granngalax till Vintergatan. NGC 346 ligger 210 000 ljusår från jorden i Tukanens stjärnbild. Ljus, vindar och hetta från tunga stjärnor har skingrat den glödande gasen inuti och runt omkring denna stjärnhop och bildat en skir nebulosa som påminner om en spindelväv. NGC 346 är, likt andra astronomiska scener, ett ofärdigt verk som förändras med tidsåldrarna. Allt eftersom nya stjärnor bildas ur löst flytande materia i området, kommer de att tändas och åter strö omkring sig kvarvarande stoft och gas. Samtidigt krusas gasen över vidsträckta vidder och förändrar ansiktet på detta glänsande vackert objekt.
NGC 346 sträcker sig över cirka 200 ljusår i rymden, ett område på ungefär 50 gånger större än avståndet mellan solen och dess närmaste grannstjärnor. Astronomer klassificerar NGC 346 som en öppen stjärnhop, vilket innebär att alla dess stjärnor föddes ur samma sammanfallande moln av materia. Gasmolnet som innesluter klungan av ljusa stjärnor kallas en emissionsnebulosa. I den har gasen hettats upp av stjärnorna tills den skiner av egen kraft, precis som neongasen i en reklamskylt.
Många av stjärnorna i NGC 346 är kosmiskt sett relativt unga, med födelsedatum bara ett par miljoner år tillbaka i tiden [eso0834]. Kraftfulla vindar som en gång blåstes ut från en tung stjärna satte igång den nuvarande omgången av stjärnfödslar genom att trycka ihop stora mängder materia: det första kritiska steget mot att nya stjärnor kan tändas. Detta moln av materia kollapsar då under dess egen tyngd, tills några områden blir tillräckligt täta och heta för att dåna fram som en lysande kamin med kärnfusion som kraftkälla — en stjärna som lyser upp det som återstår av gasen och stoftet i orådet runt omkring. I fullproppade områden med höga stjärnfödseltakter, som här i NGC 346, får vi storartade, lysande stjärnlandskap att fånga med våra teleskop.
NGC 346 ligger i det Lilla magellanska molnet, en dvärggalax omkring 210 000 ljusår från jorden. Det är trots allt relativt nära vår mycket större hemgalax Vintergatan. Liksom sin syster det Stora magellanska molnet, syns det Lilla magellanska molnet utan kikare från det södra halvklotet. Det har länge varit ett extragalaktist laboratorium för astronomer som studerar stjärnbildningens dynamik.
Den aktuella bilden togs med instrumentet WFI vid det 2,2 meters MPG/ESO-teleskop vid La Silla-observatoriet i Chile. Bilder som denna hjälper astronomer att beskriva hur stjärnor föds och utvecklas, alltmedan de ger oss glimtar av hur stjärnornas livshistorier påverkar den kosmiska miljön över tiden.
