Mounted image 023: Shooting a laser at the Galactic Centre
The sky above Paranal on 21 July 2007. Two 8.2-metre telescopes of ESO’s VLT loom against the stars and dust that make up the Milky Way. Just above Yepun — Unit Telescope 4 — shines the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. The laser beam shooting out of Yepun and aimed at the Galactic Centre will help to obtain images that are free from the blurring effect of the atmosphere, courtesy of adaptive optics.
