Imagem de grande angular da Nebulosa do Caranguejo
A Nebulosa do Caranguejo, que também toma os nomes Messier 1, NGC 1952 e Taurus A, é um dos objetos astronómicos melhor estudados do céu. Trata-se dos restos da explosão de uma supernova, que foi observada por astrónomos chineses no ano de 1054. Os filamentos emaranhados visíveis na imagem são os restos de uma estrela que explodiu e que ainda se encontra em expansão com uma velocidade de 1500 km por segundo.
Embora não seja visível a olho nu devido a filamentos de hélio e hidrogénio que se encontram em primeiro plano, o coração da nebulosa alberga duas estrelas ténues. É uma destas estrelas que é responsável pela nebulosa que vemos atualmente - a estrela conhecida como Pulsar do Caranguejo, ou CM Tau. Trata-se do corpo pequeno e denso da estrela original que deu origem à supernova. Tem apenas 20 quilómetros de diâmetro e roda em torno do seu eixo 30 vezes por segundo!
A estrela emite pulsos de radiação em todos os comprimentos de onda, desde os raios gama - esta estrela é inclusivamente uma das fontes de raios gama mais brilhantes do céu - às ondas rádio. A radiação emitida pela estrela é tão intensa que dá origem a uma onda de material que deforma as regiões internas da nebulosa. A aparência destas estruturas varia tão depressa que os astrónomos conseguem ver como é que elas se formam de novo, o que é uma rara oportunidade, já que as escalas de tempo cósmico são geralmente grandes demais para se poder observar quaisquer mudanças como esta.
Os dados do instrumento Wide Field Imager, montado no telescópio MPG/ESO de 2,2 metros, no Observatório de La Silla do ESO, utilizados para criar esta imagem foram seleccionados do arquivo ESO por Manu Meijas no âmbito da competição Tesouros Escondidos.
