October 2012

Dear Fellow Communicators,

Our anniversary “Big Bang” is nearly over here! Thank you to those of you who joined us during the live stream from Paranal Observatory in Chile on our anniversary day — 5 October 2012! We hope you enjoyed our connection to the Very Large Telescope and the Paranal platform, as well as the talks from our Headquarters in Germany. If you missed the live broadcast, you can still play the individual episodes, which can also be embedded on your websites.

Also connected with the anniversary, you can now watch individual videos for each chapter of our documentary Europe to the Stars, celebrating fifty years of ESO.

A few weeks ago we also celebrated the anniversary at a lovely Gala event in the Residenz in central Munich. An evening that will not be forgotten easily!

Since the last Newsletter we have released The Awesome Universe Exhibition Catalogue. This is intended  to accompany the ESO anniversary exhibition, but is also an impressive book with stunning astronomical photos in its own right!  Remember that most of our products can be purchased via bulk orders at discount prices, including the recent DVDs and books.

If you work in a planetarium, do not miss the planetarium show Water — A Cosmic Adventure created by the Association des Planétariums de Langue Française (APLF) in collaboration with Hamburg Planetarium and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Invite your visitors to join astrophysicist Eva Luna as she explores the turbulent origins of hydrogen and oxygen in the Universe and discover how they combined to form one of the most essential molecules on Earth, H2O. The backbone of life as we know it.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
