Inizio esplosivo per l'E-ELT
Una cerimonia per festeggiare la prima pietra miliare per il telescopio ottico/infrarosso più grande del mondo

La cerimonia inaugurale di oggi segna un significativo passo avanti verso l'E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope) dell'ESO. Parte della cima del Cerro Armazones, un picco di tremila metri, è stata fatta brillare per livellarne la sommità in preparazione alla costruzione del più grande telescopio ottico/infrarosso al mondo.
Hanno partecipato alla cerimonia inaugurale, tenuta all'Osservatorio del Paranal a circa 20 chilometri dal sito dell'esplosione, ospiti illustri sia dal Cile che dagli Stati Membri dell'ESO, nonchè rappresentanti delle comunità locali, alti funzionari del progetto e personale dell'ESO. L'evento è stato anche trasmesso in rete in diretta e ora è possibile vederne una registrazione.
L'ordine di dare inizio ai brillamenti è stato dato dal Vice Ministro cileno dei Beni Nazionali, Jorge Maldonado.
Durante l'"esplosiva" cerimonia, la compagnia cilena ICAFAL Ingeniería y Construcción S.A. ha fatto saltare parte della cima del Cerro Armazones, facendo a pezzi circa 5000 metri cubi di roccia. Questa è solo una parte dell'elaborato processo che darà una nuova forma alla montagna, in modo che possa ospitare il telescopio da 39 metri e la sua enorme cupola. Verrà rimosso un totale di 220 000 metri cubi di terra per far posto alla piattaforma dell'E-ELT da 100 per 300 metri.
I lavori di ingegneria civile sul Cerro Armazones sono iniziati nel marzo 2014 e dovrebbero terminare entro 16 mesi. Tra i lavori: la posa e la manutenzione di una strada asfaltata, la costruzione della piattaforma sulla sommità e la costruzione di un condotto di servizio fino alla cima [1].
La prima luce dell'E-ELT è prevista per il 2024, quando inizierà ad affrontare le più grandi sfide astronomiche del nostro tempo. Il gigantesco telescopio permetterà l'esplorazione di regioni ancora inesplorate dell'Universo - sarà il "più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".

[1] Tutte le strutture che verranno costruite sono specificate nella Proposta di Costruzione dell'E-ELT, un libro di 264 pagine che contiene i dettagli di tutti gli aspetti del progetto, con una sintesi esecutiva. Nel giugno 2011 il Consiglio dell'ESO ha approvato il disegno di base rivisto del telescopio e nel dicembre 2012 ha approvato l'intero programma dell'E-ELT (si vedano anche ann13019, ann13033 e ann13042).

L'ESO (European Southern Observatory, o Osservatorio Europeo Australe) è la principale organizzazione intergovernativa di Astronomia in Europa e l'osservatorio astronomico più produttivo al mondo. L'ESO è il partner europeo di un telescopio astronomico di concetto rivoluzionario, ALMA, il più grande progetto astronomico esistente. L'ESO al momento sta progettando l'European Extremely Large Telescope o E-ELT (significa Telescopio Europeo Estremamente Grande), un telescopio da 39 metri che opera nell'ottico e infrarosso vicino e che diventerà "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".
