Auxiliary perspective

Two of the 8.2m Unit Telescopes (UTs) can be seen around the outside of this fisheye projection of the Paranal Observatory in Chile. The photo is taken from the perspective of one of the smaller 1.8m diameter Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs), which is open and observing. These smaller telescopes are movable, and can work every night as an interferometer, allowing astronomers to see details up to 25 times finer than with the individual telescopes.
