Massive Cluster of Galaxies RXCJ1206.2-0848

Very massive distant cluster of galaxies RXCJ1206.2-0848, located at a redshift of z = 0.44. The contours indicate the X-ray surface brightness distribution. Most of the yellowish galaxies are cluster members. A gravitationally lensed galaxy with a distorted, very elongated image is seen, just right of the centre. The image was obtained with the EFOSC multi-mode instrument on the ESO 3.6-m telescope at the La Silla Observatory (Chile).
