First fringes of Sirius with VLTI
The "first fringes" obtained with the VLTI, as seen on the computer screen during the observation (upper right window). The fringe pattern arises when the light beams from two small telescopes are brought together in the VINCI instrument. The pattern itself contains information about the angular extension of the observed object, here the bright star Sirius.
